Part 1: Back Up the Course
01
Open the course you want to back up, go to More → Course Reuse.
02
Set the top-left dropdown to Backup.
03
On the Initial settings screen, choose what to include (activities, blocks, filters). Turn Include enrolled users off if you're creating a reusable template rather than an archive of this exact class.
04
Click Next. On the Schema screen, tick or untick individual sections and activities if you only want part of the course.
05
Click Next through the confirmation screen, then click Perform backup.
06
Click Continue, then find your file under Course backup area and click Download to save the .mbz file to your device.
!
Keep this file somewhere you'll find it again, e.g. a dated folder like "ACC101 Backup - Trimester 2 2026." The filename Moodle generates is long and unmemorable on its own.
Part 2: Restore It Into the New Course
01
Open the new (destination) course, go to More → Course Reuse.
02
Set the top-left dropdown to Restore.
03
Upload the .mbz file you downloaded, click Restore.
04
Scroll to the bottom of the summary page, click Continue.
05
Choose how it's restored: "Merge the backup course into this course" to add it alongside existing content, or "Delete the contents of this course and then restore" if the new course is empty and should end up as an exact copy.
06
Click Next through the Schema, Review, and Process screens until Perform restore appears, then click it.
07
Once restore completes, open the course and check dates, the welcome video, and any Zoom/Meet links, these often need updating for the new run of the unit.
!
Restoring into a course that already has content works the same way as the Master Template restore, choose Merge carefully, since it can create duplicate sections if the destination course isn't empty.
